The Disciplinary Board hears the most serious cases of lawyer misconduct. The board issues written opinions following its hearings.
The 20-member board appointed by the Supreme Court of Virginia is composed of 16 attorneys and four lay members. Ideally members have experience within the disciplinary system (local disciplinary district committees). Volunteers are solicited in Virginia Lawyer magazine, in emails, and online.
- Applications are accepted from mid-September through mid-November.
- Applicants must submit a resume, a writing sample responding to a disciplinary system hypothetical fact pattern made available when the application process opens, and a brief statement of interest to [email protected] during the application period.
- Applications will be reviewed by the Disciplinary Board, the VSB Nominating Committee, the VSB Executive Committee, and the VSB Council. Appointment recommendations will be made to the Supreme Court of Virginia for consideration at its March business meeting.
At any point throughout the year, see the current list of vacancies for opportunities to serve.
Upcoming meetings may be found on the Calendar, and are subject to the Virginia Freedom of Information Act. Agendas and call in numbers will be provided on the meeting entry on the Calendar.
